Could Marco Asensio get a lifeline in his career at Real Madrid?

(Football news) Marco Asensio has had an interesting week with Real Madrid. It all started in the match against Mallorca which Real Madrid won 4-1. The next day headlines were all about the footage of Marco Asensio throwing his bib and kicking the ground in frustration after not being subbed in despite warming up for a long time. In his post match press conference, Carlo Ancelotti said that the Spaniard's anger is normal and that he agrees with it. Following the outburst, Ancelotti said that Asensio will have a role to play this season and that he is training well.

Real Madrid were stuck at 0-0 in their next game against RB Leipzig when Ancelotti turned to Asensio as his first substitute. The decision in itself would've been a confidence booster for Asensio because his manager trusted him. There was a small section of the crowd that whistled Asensio presumably for his antics against Mallorca. Asensio did have the last laugh as he scored an excellent goal right at the end. The Spaniard was praised by teammates Nacho, Fede Valverde and by Ancelotti as well. The Italian manager said that he was really happy with Asensio's goal and his attitude in training. He also said that the player wasn't sure whether to leave or stay but then ended up staying and now they're all happy.

Asensio's contract expires at the end of this season and Real Madrid were open to selling him in the transfer window that just shut. He was linked with a lot of clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal and AC Milan but ended up staying because none of the offers convinced him. Now he is in a little bit of trouble having played just 44 minutes this season. Asensio was in the last Spain squad called up by Luis Enrique where he provided 2 assists. He will need to play a lot more if he wants to make it to the World Cup squad in December. The goal against Leipzig will be a massive help as it could turn the tide into making him a regular substitute at the very least. The contracts of 6 Real Madrid players namely Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Dani Ceballos, Nacho and Mariano are expiring next season. Reports suggest that at the moment all the players except Asensio and Mariano are set to receive a renewal proposal from the club. A January exit seems very likely at this moment in time but there is still a lot of time left for things to change.
