Christopher Nkunku signs a pre contract with Chelsea

(Football news) RB Leipzig forward and France international Christopher Nkunku looks set to join Chelsea by next summer. This season, he already has eight goals and one assist in 12 games to his name and his transfer will come at a cost of over £53 million, as a pre-contract agreement is said to be agreed. According to reports, the 24-year-old has already gone through with his medical with the Blues.

Nkunku, who recently turned 24, attracted interest from several top clubs, including the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. But Chelsea positioned themselves at the front of the queue after overseeing private tests in Frankfurt a few weeks ago with a Chelsea orthopaedic present there. When asked for comments, sources close to Nkunku insisted there was no agreement with Chelsea, or any other club, and the medical checks were routine for all players at the club.

Reports first appeared in German newspaper Bild and have since been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano. Nkunku is believed to have a release clause in his contract that is set at €60 million but only comes into effect in the summer of 2023. Chelsea have indicated a willingness to meet that price, but as of now no deal has yet been reached given other clubs are interested and the clause is not in effect. Nkunku last season rose to the occasion with an impressive tally of 35 goals in 52 games across all competitions as he went on to win the Bundesliga Player of the Year, beating the likes of Haaland and Robert Lewandowski.

The France international has the ability to play as a centre-forward, a second striker or an attacking midfielder. Chelsea owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are keen on pursuing a transfer strategy which involves acquiring younger players and committing to long-term contracts as they have identified Nkunku as their main target. Chelsea were keen on signing Nkunku this summer but Leipzig wanted to keep him for another season and agreed a two-year contract extension with the player until 2026 with a release clause to his contract.
