Chelsea to extend Thomas Tuchel’s contract, manager gets one game ban

(Football news) Chelsea are in talks with manager Thomas Tuchel’s representatives to extend his contract with his current deal valid until 2024. The German initially signed an 18 month contract with the Blues after taking over from Frank Lampard but signed an extension after leading Chelsea to the Champions League title in 2021. The club will travel to Elland Road on Sunday and Tuchel will be in the dugout for the fixture despite being given a one game ban and fined £35,000 by the Football Association after his confrontation with Tottenham boss Antonio Conte after the match last week.

Speaking about his contract extension, Tuchel said “My people talk to the owners and take care of everything else. You know how glad I am to be here and how much I like it. There are talks but I think given the situation where we come from, and where we are in the middle of the transfer period, I think it is the very best if I focus on my team and on sports and on being competitive.”

The Football Association handed the German manager a one game ban (which is temporarily suspended pending a full written report) and a £35,000 fine following a fiery altercation with Antonio Conte after the end of a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge which resulted in the pair being sent off by referee Anthony Taylor. A statement released by the FA read “An independent regulatory commission has today ordered that Thomas Tuchel be fined £35,000 and banned from the touchline for one match, and Antonio Conte be fined £15,000 after they respectively breached FA Rule E3.

“Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte admitted that their behaviour after the final whistle of the Premier League game between Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday, August 14, 2022, was improper, and both managers requested a paper hearing. These sanctions are subject to appeal, and Thomas Tuchel's one-match touchline ban has been suspended temporarily pending the independent regulatory commission's written reasons for its decision that will be made available in due course."

Speaking about his altercation with Conte, Tuchel said “Of course we laugh, it's very important to laugh, and laugh at ourselves. I was laughing in the dressing room; it was the heat of the match and we didn't insult each other. I think the thing would have ended if there were not 20 people around us that make the thing look much worse than it actually was. It was passion between two men who fought for their team and I hope they don't make more of it. He was fighting for his team, I was fighting for my team. I have nothing but the biggest respect for him."
