Chelsea owner Todd Boehly named chairman and interim sporting director

(Football news) Chelsea have confirmed that sporting director Marina Granovskaia will be leaving the club at the end of this summer’s transfer window with co-owner Todd Boehly being named as a temporary replacement and chairman at the club. Granovskaia has been an influential figure at Stamford Bridge, earning the reputation as one of the toughest and most capable sporting directors in the world during Roman Abramovich’s reign. The club will begin the process of hiring a new sporting director while Todd Boehly receives assistance from Granovskaia.

In a statement released by Chelsea, Boehly said “We thank Marina for her many years of excellent service to the club and wish her all the best in her future ventures”. The decision to part ways with Granovskaia comes a few days after chairman Bruce Buck departed from his role and will now serve as a senior advisor. Buck said “I am proud to have helped Chelsea realise great success on the pitch and make a positive impact in the community.” Boehly added “Bruce has led Chelsea Football Club to the highest levels of international and domestic football, while also developing one of the most active social responsibility projects in sport. We thank Bruce for his service and his commitment to the club.”

The West London club have made a number of changes after the takeover with several Boehly-Clearlake Capital consortium figureheads being included in the board. Boehly said “As custodians of Chelsea FC, we now begin executing our long-term vision and plan for the club, creating an outstanding experience for its passionate, loyal fans, and continuing to challenge for top honours in line with Chelsea FC's dedicated history. Working together, side by side, we are firmly committed to winning, both on and off the pitch. For us, that effort has begun."

Some of the new board members at Chelsea are Clearlake chiefs and Chelsea co-controlling owne Behdad Eghbali, Jose Feliciano, Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Mark Walter, Swiss magnate Hansjorg Wyssm, British tycoon Jonathan Goldstein, Barbara Charone, Daniel Finkelstein and Clearlake Capital partner James Pade. In an interview with Chelsea co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano, they said “As the new era of the Boehly-Clearlake ownership begins, we are excited to build a championship organisation and grow Chelsea FC as a global platform. We look forward to backing Thomas Tuchel, Emma Hayes and their teams, and will provide proactive, unbending support to make Chelsea's loyal fans and our partners proud."
