Chelsea defeat Norwich City despite off-field problems

(Football news) It took Chelsea less than three minutes to open the scoring at Carrow Road as Trevor Chalobah headed home past a hopeless Tim Krul to give the Blues a perfect start in the Premier League. Mason Mount provided the perfect assist to Chalobah and the England international combined well with Kai Havertz to score Chelsea’s second goal. The German squared the ball to Mount whose first touch took him away from Ozan Kabak as he fired the ball into the roof of the net.

Just before the half-time ended, Chelsea largely dominated the match, enjoying 74% possession which prompted Norwich City manager Dean Smith to make a few changes by introducing Rashica and Lucas Rupp at the break who revitalised the hosts. Norwich found their intensity in the second half and were eventually rewarded when Rashica’s cross was intercepted by Chalobah’s arm and referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot after a VAR review.

The hosts had an opportunity to equalise when Kenny McLean nodded a freekick across goal but Edouard Mendy’s diving catch nullified the attack. Chelsea then managed to score the crucial third goal and regained their two goal advantage when Kai Havertz found the back of the net in the 90th minute. Naturally, the game was overshadowed by the fact that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s assets were frozen by the United Kingdom government and it may have dire repercussions on the London based football club.

In the post match interview, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said “Of course, it's out there, it's big news, it has a huge impact so that's why it's big news. It's the subject in the talks, you might on a normal day talk about the Champions League games from yesterday but nobody was talking about the impact. But in the end, it's nice to enter a fixed schedule approaching a match, three hours before we eat, before that we have a tactical meeting, and then we have a set-piece meeting. Then we go to the stadium, so it helps you to focus because you're used to it, and we cannot influence the situation. Sometimes it's good to sweat it out, we tried to work hard together and sometimes that's the best way to get the focus back."
