Chelsea aim to pull off the impossible at Santiago Bernabeu

(Football news) After winning the 1st leg 3-1 at the Stamford Bridge, Real Madrid would be looking to finish the job of eliminating Chelsea and progressing to the semi finals for the 2nd consecutive season. Not only do Chelsea have to come back from a two goal deficit, they have to do it in front of a roaring Santiago Bernabeu. On the weekend Real Madrid got a regulation 2-0 win over Getafe while Chelsea dismantled Southampton 6-0 away from home.

The first half at Stamford Bridge was some of the worst football Chelsea have played since Thomas Tuchel's arrival. They responded well on the weekend with the win against Southampton but it will still be a very difficult task. Chelsea will have to put a lot of pressure on Real Madrid's midfield which won't be easy to do. Romelu Lukaku picked up an injury in training and hasn't travelled with the squad which is a big blow. Andreas Christensen was running circles around Vinicius Jr in the first leg. Tuchel will have to find a solution to keep Vinicius Jr tied down for the match which is why he may have to play a flat 4 man defence.

Real Madrid will be without Eder Militao who is suspended while centre back Jesus Vallejo has tested positive for Covid. Carlo Ancelotti rested Toni Kroos and Luka Modric on the weekend. They will be fresh and ready to deal with Chelsea's high energy. The big selection headache for Ancelotti will be the right wing. Rodrygo who played there on the weekend did a good job but Fede Valverde's energy will be much needed. Ferland Mendy missed the game against Getafe due to muscle overload but is expected to be back. Nacho and Alaba are guaranteed to start in the heart of the defence as that is the only option.

Chelsea will definitely come out all guns blazing and Real Madrid might have to contain them for a while. If Chelsea don't manage to get an early goal then there might be a little panic which Real Madrid will take advantage of. Militao's absence is a big blow because without his recovery pace Real Madrid cannot afford to play a high line against the likes of Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic and Kai Havertz. Extra time is also a possibility where the bench of both the teams will be tested.
