Champions League: Messi scores first PSG goal in win against Man City while Real Madrid endure shocking defeat to Sheriff Tiraspol

(Football news) The blockbuster fixture of the night was undoubtedly Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester City and boy did it not disappoint! Lionel Messi opened his account for the French giants with a second half goal after Idrissa Gueye’s powerful shot gave them a lead early in the first half. Manchester City should have been level on goals when Raheem Sterling’s header hit the post followed by Bernardo Silva hitting the bar three yards away from goal. However, any hopes of making a comeback were extinguished 16 minutes from time when Messi finally struck a trademark left foot shot in the top left corner to record PSG’s first win over Man City.

With this result, Paris Saint-Germain are now top of Group A followed by Club Brugge while Manchester City languish in third position. Pep Guardiola’s team will now have to recover in time for a difficult trip to Anfield as the gear up to face league leaders Liverpool in the Premier League. 

Meanwhile at the Santiago Bernabeu, 13 times European Champions Real Madrid were stunned by Sheriff Tiraspol who defeated the Los Blancos 2-1 at the Spanish capital. The Moldovian side have now won both their Champions League matches and are currently on top of Group D with six points from two games. Sheriff got the lead in the 25th minute when Jasur Jakhshibaev’s header found the back of the net but the scores were level in the second half thanks to Karim Benzema who slotted home a penalty following a VAR review. Just when it looked like the match would end in a draw, Sheriff Tiraspol stunned the world when Sebastien Thill scored from 20 yards to snatch all three points for his side. 

Liverpool looked at their unstoppable best with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Porto. A brace from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino as well as a goal from Sadio Mane comprehensively defeated the Portuguese side yet again Estadio do Dragao. Mehdi Taremi scored a consolation goal in the 74th minute with a header but it was too little too late for Porto as their goalkeeper Diogo Costa made two errors leading to goals in the match. With this result, Liverpool went on top of Group B with six points from two games and are likely to qualify into the next round.

Ajax maintained their perfect start in the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Besiktas. Goals from Steven Berghuis and Sebastien Haller were all it took for the Dutch club to snatch 3 points at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Haller has now scored five goals in the Champions League this season, the most by any player in his first two appearances of the competition. At the Signal Iduna Park, Borussia Dortmund climbed on top of Group C with a 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon when Donyell Malen scored after being set up by talented English midfielder Jude Bellingham.

A stoppage time penalty goal by Luis Suarez helped Atletico Madrid to a 2-1 win over AC Milan at the San Siro in the Champions League. The Italian giants started off well, when Rafael Leao’s goal helped AC Milan take the lead in the 20th minute but things took a turn for the worse nine minutes later when Franck Kessie was sent off from a second yellow card. Antoine Griezmann levelled the scoring six minutes from time, his first goal since his return to Atletico Madrid and Suarez scored a penalty past Mike Maignan to seal all three points.
