Bundesliga: Bayern come out on top against Dortmund in the Der Klassiker as both Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen create history

(Football news) Bayern extended their stay at the top of the table after a controversial 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund. The match lived up to its billing as both the sides played end to end football, in the first half just after five minutes Julian Brandt peeled off his marker and thundered in a powerful shot for the lead after an exquisite through ball from Jude Bellingham, but soon Bayern drew level four minutes later when defender Mats Hummels tried to clear a high ball before Thomas Mueller got it but the ball fell for Lewandowski who made no mistake with his finish. Kingsely Coman just before the break scored after another sloppy Dortmund clearance gave the Frenchman an easy chance who fired it in to beat keeper Gregor Kobel.

Three minutes after the restart it was Dortmund's who came out all guns blazing with Jude Bellingham laying the ball off for Haaland on his right foot and the Norwegian bagged his 51st goal in his 51st Bundesliga match with a sublime curled shot into the top corner but a controversial Hummels handball decision following a lengthy VAR review allowed Lewandowski to score his 26th goal in all competitions already this season. The match was filled with controversy as Dortmund head coach Marco Rose was sent off after a second booking for dissent following the penalty decision, Dortmund will be fuming with the referee after they thought they won a clear cut penalty but neither VAR or the on field referee changed the decision.

With this result, Bayern moved up to 34 points with this sixth consecutive league win over them, leaving Dortmund in second place on 30. Bayer Leverkusen are in third place on 27 as the record extending 10 champions set to regain their throne once again. “I think we deserved to win but I also understand the discussions over the two penalty situations. It was a very tight game that was worthy of its reputation. We could have scored more in the first half. Dortmund did it well early in the second half but we found our rhythm again and had good control." Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

Jude Bellingham after the match said, "For me it wasn't [a penalty], Bellingham claimed after the final whistle. [Mats] Hummels isn't even looking at the ball, he's fighting to get it and it just sort of hits him, it hits him and I don't even think he's looking at the ball. You can look at a lot of the decisions in the game, you give a referee that has match-fixed before the biggest game in Germany, what do you expect?"

Erling Haaland expressed his frustration on the referee by saying,”I think it was a scandal when it comes to the refereeing, the Norwegian fired, while also expressing his anger at seeing a penalty appeal for Marco Reus dismissed. He was arrogant, and I will say no more."

Bayer Leverkusen won 7-1 against relegation-threatened Fruth. Patrik Schick scored four goals in 27 minutes in the second half as they made it three consecutive wins in a row which meant that they climbed into third place in the Bundesliga table. The 25-year-old Czech striker took his season tally to 12 league goals after scoring all of his four goals in the second half performance, to stretch Leverkusen's unbeaten run to four wins in a row in the league games to lift them to 27 points.

Freiburg created history against Monchengladbach as they scored 6 goals in the first 40 minutes of the game to pile on Gladbach’s misery with the best opening 45 minutes by an away team in Bundesliga history and which meant that they climbed to fourth place.in the table. Goals from Eggestien, Schade, Lienhart, Hofler, Holler and Schlotterbeck within 37 minutes as Frieburg ran riot at Borussia Park. The only other team to be 6-0 up at halftime in a Bundesliga era was, ironically, Gladbach in 1978 as Borussia Dortmund won 12-0.
