Breel Embolo is set to join AS Monaco from Monchengladbach

(Football news) AS Monaco have agreed a €12.5m fee with Borussia Mönchengladbach for Swiss international Breel Embolo who is set for a medical with the club tomorrow. Embolo will be Monaco’s second big summer signing following the arrival of Takumi Minamino (27) and further reinforcements are expected for the Ligue 1 side. Monaco have been also linked with a move for former Torino striker Andrea Belotti who is a free agent since the expiry of his contract with the Serie A side. Embolo’s imminent arrival at the Principality will not stop the club hierarchy from targeting Bellotti.

Embolo just turned 25 and he has already racked up over 50 appearances for the Swiss international side where he has gone on to score 9 goals. In the Bundesliga last season, he made 29 appearances, scoring 9 times for a struggling Gladbach side. His last 6 goals came in the final 8 games of the 2021/22 season. Monaco’s summer spending is not going to end with the signing of Embolo. They sold Aurélien Tchouaméni (22) for €100m sale as Monaco have money to spend and the club have been linked with multiple midfielders to replace the young French midfielder. Leicester’s Boubakary Soumaré and Lille’s Amadou Onana have both been touted as Tchouaméni replacements.

Embolo still has the nitty gritties of completing his medical at the French club. The Swiss national’s transfer escalated quickly because his contract at Gladbach expires on June 30, 2023. Gladbach manager Roland Virkus had recently confirmed that the club should have a clause with Embolo to extend his contract for one more year until 2024 but Embolo was heavily linked with Olympique Lyon in the past and is set to join the principality club. The brawny Swiss can form a lethal new forward line alongside Wissam Ben Yedder (31) and former Bundesliga star Kevin Volland (29).

Gladbach trainer Daniel Farke said on GladbachLIVE on Wednesday evening about the upcoming Embolo departure: "We'll see what happens. That's not my issue at all. I work with realities. Everything else is an issue for the club and the player himself and his advisors. I can only say that Breel has presented himself very well in the past few days, is in good shape, has trained very well and we will see everything else."
