Bayern slump to a surprise defeat while Dortmund defeat Schalke

(Football news) Defending champions Bayern Munich suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Augsburg in the Bundesliga to stretch their winless run to four consecutive Bundesliga matches and drop to fourth place in the standings. Augsburg midfielder Mergim Berisha slotted in with a composed finish in the 59th minute to seal the three points and pile more pressure on Bayern. The hosts were not intimidated by the Bavarian giants at any stage and their seven shots on goal were almost double of Bayern's total in the opening half.

The Bavarians were fresh from their Champions League win over Barcelona in midweek but lacked clinical edge with both Sadio Mane and Leroy Sane having a share of chances. Sane should have levelled the scoring in the 73rd minute when he had only Augsburg keeper Rafal Gikiewicz to beat but the shot stopper stood his ground to block his shot. He then went on to make a sensational double save in stoppage time to protect Augsburg's lead. It was the first time in 87 matches that Bayern failed to score in a league game and the first time in 20 years that Bayern had gone four league games without a win. With this result Bayern are on 12 points, three points off Borussia Dortmund and Augsburg climbed up to 11th place onto ninth place

"After four games without a win we are stunned and ashamed," Bayern forward Thomas Muller said. "I can't discuss a lot of positives from this game. If you really analyse it we could be winners with so many chances we created. But if you don't convert them then you are here with zero points."

Youssoufa Moukoko’s goal gave Borussia Dortmund a 1-0 victory over local rivals Schalke in the Ruhr valley derby to send them temporarily on top of the Bundesliga standings. The 17-year-old headed in at the far post at the 79th minute and became the youngest ever scorer in the Ruhr derby. There was bad news for the BVB fans as their captain Marco Reus was carried off with what looked like a very serious ankle injury after a collision with Florian Flick.

The Germany international was recently called up for the Nations League matches against Hungary and England this month. Reus turned his ankle and had to be treated on the pitch for several minutes before he was stretched off in the 32nd minute. The 32-year-old sat out Germany's 2014 World Cup-winning run after being injured in the final warm-up game before going to Brazil, he subsequently missed Euro 2016 also due to injury. In the match Dortmund wasted several chances before Moukoko's substitution in the 64th which changed the game, with the teenager finding the right gap in the box to rise highest and meet Wolf's cross for the match winner.
