Atlético Madrid confirm the departure of Luis Suarez

(Football news) Atletico Madrid in a statement have announced that Luis Suarez will be leaving the club after his contract runs out at the end of the season. Luis Suarez started in his last home game as an Atletico player where the fans made a tifo for him that said "Thank you for making us champions". Suarez will play his last game in Rojiblanco colours against Real Betis. The Uruguayan played two seasons for the Madrid side, one of which was incredibly successful while the other was underwhelming.

After 6 successful years at FC Barcelona, Luis Suarez was informed by new manager Ronald Koeman that his services were no longer needed. Suarez was heavily linked with Juventus but the move ultimately failed. Atletico Madrid signed the striker for around €6 million and he agreed to a 2 year contract. The treatment of Suarez was heavily criticised by people including teammate Lionel Messi who said that he did not deserve to be thrown out like this. Diego Simeone straight away put Suarez into the side and the Uruguayan became an integral part of the side. He had an incredible start to his Atletico career with 9 goals and 2 assists in his first 12 La Liga matches. The striker scored 21 league goals in his first season as he led Atletico Madrid to the league title. He scored the winner in the last two league games which eventually kept Atlético Madrid 2 points ahead of Real Madrid.

Despite Atletico Madrid's struggles this season, Suarez has scored 13 goals in all competitions. The arrival of Antoine Griezmann and Matheus Cunha along with the improvement of Joao Felix pushed Suarez down the pecking order a little. The Rojiblancos as a team have had a disappointing season but individually Suarez wasn't too bad. Now at the age of 35 Suarez is all set for a new challenge. Reports in Spain suggest that despite lucrative offers from the MLS, the striker prefers to continue in Europe. Recent reports claim that a move to Aston Villa is on the cards with former teammate Steven Gerrard keen on bringing the Uruguayan to link up with Philippe Coutinho once again.
