Tristan Stubbs bags the highest bid in the maiden SA20 auction

(Cricket news) Tristan Stubbs drew the biggest bid in the first ever SA20 auction, with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape shelling out a massive 9.2 million for the 22-year old. Stubbs was at the centre of a bidding war with the MI Cape Town. It marked a whirlwind six-month period for Stubbs, who earned an IPL call-up as a replacement player, after that he turned heads at the CSA T20 Challenge in 2022 where he scored 293 runs at an unbelievable strike-rate of 183.82. Stubbs has gone on to make his South Africa debut and has been named in the Proteas squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Sunrisers and the Pretoria Capitals began the day with the biggest purse and made a big splash on Marco Jansen for 6.1 million while the Capitals signed South African batter Rilee Rossouw with the second-highest bid of 6.9 million after an intense battle with Super Kings and MI Cape Town. The Capitals also signed Wayne Parnell for 5.6 million while Sisanda Magala went to the Sunrisers for R 5.4 million.

The surprise came when hard-hitting West Indian all-rounder Odean Smith, whose base price was 1.75 million, found no takers. Eoin Morgan and James Neesham were other big name players that earned no bids. The big shock came when South Africa's T20I captain Temba Bavuma and Test captain Dean Elgar went unsold as they found no buyers. However, in an accelerated auction, Smith was picked by MI Cape Town, Morgan went to the Royals and Neesham went to the Capitals.
