Takeaways from India’s whitewash ODI series win over the West Indies

(Cricket news) India have won the ODI series against West Indies after winning all 3 matches. Despite the absence of important players like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, India have put in an extraordinary performance away from home. Technically at this moment in time Shikhar Dhawan, Suryakumar Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are the only players who would get into a full strength Indian side. The first two matches were very close encounters while the last rain affected match was very one sided. West Indies did play some good cricket throughout the series but India proved to be too good for them at times. Batting, bowling and fielding were all on point for India.

Shubman Gill was named the Player of the Series for scoring 205 runs, more than any other batter. Gill scored 64, 43 and 98* in the 3 innings and was unlucky all 3 times. In the first match he was run-out while in the 2nd match he was caught and bowled while trying to play the backward scoop in bizarre fashion. In the 3rd match the innings was called off due to rain when Gill was unbeaten at 98. The decision to give the Punjab batter a chance in the ODI format has been a good one and he is henceforth expected to be a part of the next squad.

Shikhar Dhawan got a chance to captain the side and did a very good job. He was the 2nd highest run scorer of the series and was unlucky to miss out on a century in the first match. He has further strengthened his place in the One day squad to the point where he is undroppable. Shreyas Iyer also had a good series as he scored 2 fifties and narrowly missed out on one. Sanju Samson also did well in the 2nd match scoring 54. The batting unit as a whole was pretty strong in all three matches.

Ravindra Jadeja's injury provided a great opportunity for Axar Patel to get a chance in ODIs. He played a match winning knock in the 2nd innings to win the series for India. The bowling unit was also a big positive as Shardul Thakur and Yuzvendra Chahal both took 7 wickets each. Mohammed Siraj played a very crucial part in all 3 matches and was India's best bowler in the series. India's next ODI series against Zimbabwe where the squad selection will be very interesting to see.
