T20 World Cup: India convincingly defeat Namibia by 9 wickets in Kohli’s last game as T20 skipper

(Cricket news) India defeated Namibia by nine wickets in their last game of the T20 World Cup which also saw Ravi Shastri depart from his head coach position and Virat Kohli stepping down as T20 captain. India won the toss and elected to field, as Namibia’s openers Stephan Baard (21 runs off 21) and Michael van Lingen (14 runs off 15) gave the underdogs a decent start. However, Ravindra Jadeja took the wicket of Baard in the 8th over while van Lingen was caught by Mohammed Shami off Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery as wickets continued to tumble for Namibia.

Craig Williams got out for a duck after Jadeja had him stumped while skipper Gerhard Erasmus (12 runs off 20) was caught by Rishabh Pant off Ravichandran Ashwin’s delivery. Nicol Loftie-Eaton (5 runs off 5) was caught at slip by Rohit Sharma at the start of the 10th over as Namibia struggled with 47-4. David Wiese (26 runs off 25) put up a fight to get Namibia out of trouble but was caught by Rohit Sharma from Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery as things began to get from bad to worse for the batting side. J J Smit (9 runs off 9) was also caught by Rohit Sharma while Zane Green was dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin in the very first delivery. Namibia got some consolation when 13 runs were scored from Mohammed Shami’s last over to end their innings at 132-8.

India could not have got off to a better start with openers Rohit Sharma (56 runs off 37) and KL Rahul (54 runs off 36) getting a half century partnership inside the powerplay with both also getting their own eventually. In the 10th over, Jan Frylinck (1-19) managed to take the wicket of Rohit Sharma after the 34 year old was caught by Zane Green. However, KL Rahul continued his fine display alongside Suryakumar Yadav (25 runs off 19) as India scored 136 runs from 15.2 overs. The Indian contingent will be undoubtedly disappointed with their failure to progress beyond the Super 12 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup but defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand proved to be a major blow to their aspirations.

With the semi-finals on the horizon, England is set to take on New Zealand on Wednesday at 7:30 pm IST while Pakistan will battle against Australia on Thursday at 7:30 pm IST.
