T20 World Cup: England continue their dominant run by defeating Bangladesh by 8 wickets

(Cricket news) A brilliant individual performance by opener Jason Roy (61 runs off 38) helped England defeat Bangladesh by eight wickets at the T20 World Cup. The Three Lions had previously defeated West Indies on Saturday and put up another convincing performance against Bangladesh in what was the first T20 international fixture between the two sides.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat but early wickets by Moeen dismissed openers Liton Das and Mohammad Naim in consecutive deliveries and The Tigers soon found themselves in trouble with a score of 27-3. To make matters worse, Shakib Al Hasan was sent back after scoring just four runs when Adil Rashid made a fantastic catch at short fine leg. A partnership by Mushfiqur Rahim (29) and Mahmudullah (19) helped Bangladesh rebuild their innings as the pair scored 37 runs off 5.2 overs.

Just when it looked like Bangladesh may be back in the match, Mushfiqur was dismissed by an lbw after reverse sweeping Livingstone with a review going in England’s favor. Afif Hussain was left stranded between the wickets to ensure England took their fifth wicket after a confusion was caused by Tymal Mills due to mis-fielding at short fine leg. Bangladesh were then reduced to 83-6 when Mahmudullah was dismissed, resulting in only four boundaries scored in 15 overs for The Tigers.

Tymal Mills took the wicket of Mahedi Hasan (11) soon after and it became clear that Bangladesh would need a miracle to post a respectable scoreline that would challenge England. However, The Tigers scored 19 runs off Adil Rashid’s over which also resulted in the first six of the match. The happiness was short lived as Mills conceded only five runs in the final over and took two wickets, ultimately reducing Bangladesh to a meagre score of 124-9.

England started their innings brightly, scoring 37 runs from the first five overs with opener Jason Roy looking in exquisite form in his 50th T20 international. Jos Buttler (18 off 18) was the first to fall for the Three Lions which brought on Dawid Malan. England were 50-1 from the powerplay, nearly double the score that Bangladesh had posted in their innings and the partnership between Roy and Malan eventually guided England to a score of 90-1 in ten overs.

Roy achieved his half century in 33 balls, hitting a powerful six off Nasum’s delivery and then scoring another maximum in the next ball. Jonny Bairstow ended England’s innings with a four as England cruised to a comfortable victory against Bangladesh at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The Three Lions will next face Australia on Saturday.
