South Africa win the DafaNews Cup T20 series with a 42 run win

(Cricket news) After winning the toss and electing to bat, South Africa lost two wickets in the first over with Ireland’s Paul Stirling taking nearly identical wickets of Temba Bavuma and Janneman Malan. Aiden Markram was dismissed by Mark Adair and Simi Singh took Quinton de Kock’s wicket from an lbw in his first delivery. When Rassie van der Dussen was dismissed in the last ball of the 10th over, South Africa’s score was 58 – 5 at the halfway stage.

However, Wiaan Mulder and Miller’s partnership doubled the scoring for South Africa and despite starting slowly, having only registered one boundary from the 10th – 15th overs, it provided the much needed stability to regain control of the match. After a six from Simi Singh’s last ball of his final over, South Africa changed their intent to register as many runs as possible on the scoreboard. Adair’s over proved to be costly when a pair of fours followed by a six and another four off consecutive balls kept the South African score ticking. Mulder was dismissed in the first ball of the 18th over but South Africa finished strongly, with four sixes in the final over.

Ireland struggled to get going with Kevin O’Brien dismissed on the last ball of the first over. Paul Stirling overtook Brendon McCullum as 10th in the all-time men’s T20I run scorers chart. A partnership between Dockrell and Stirling briefly gave Ireland hope but three wickets in three overs put a stop to Ireland’s chase. At the halfway stage, Ireland were 56-5, only two runs behind South Africa at the same stage with the same number of wickets. Shane Getkate scored 24 runs off 17 balls including two powerful sixes, but he was soon dismissed when Bavuma caught his shot at midwicket.

The chase was effectively concluded thanks to a two wicket over by Fortuin. Craig Young was dismissed for a duck and Little’s dismissal after a feeble fight resulted in a comfortable South Africa victory.
