Sensational Shami leads Gujarat Titans to 1st ever IPL win

(Cricket news) The 4th match of the 2022 IPL was an iconic one. It was the first time that the 2 new teams Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants were playing a match and they were facing each other. Hardik Pandya, captaining his first ever white ball game won the toss and elected to bat first mainly because of the dew factor just like every other toss winning captain.

The game started with a Mohammed Shami masterclass in new ball bowling. The fiery seamer took 3 wickets in his 3 over new ball spell as he dismissed KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock and Manish Pandey. Half centuries from Deepak Hooda and young debutant Ayush Badoni rescued Lucknow from a precarious position as they finished their innings on 158/6. Shami ended up with figures of 3/25 in his 4 overs while Varun Aaron got two scalps and Rashid Khan took a wicket.

With 159 runs to defend, Dushmanta Chameera just like Shami gave his side a perfect start by dismissing Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar in quick succession. Matthew Wade, Hardik Pandya and David Miller all scored 30s while Rahul Tewatia hit an unbeaten 40 off just 24 balls. The match however was won by Abhinav Manohar who hit 3 boundaries in the last over. It was a well paced run chase by the Gujarat Titans with 5 players contributing.

Four matches into this season, all four teams that have won the toss have elected to bowl first and all have won. The stat obviously won't last long but the toss will be crucial in all the games this season for sure. The dew factor is very big as it has always been in Mumbai. Only time will tell if teams find a way to successfully defend targets.
