Mishaps at the auction table are costing Mumbai Indians

(Cricket news) The biggest surprise of the IPL season so far is that two of the most successful teams in the history of the tournament are rock bottom of the points table. Chennai Super Kings have won just one of their 6 games while Mumbai Indians have lost all 6 matches. With the new format the season is very long but it will be very difficult for either team to make it to the playoffs from this position.

CSK are not performing well enough and the injury to Deepak Chahar has cost them dearly. MI on the other hand look to be really short of resources at the moment. While it is understandable that they have built a team for the future but the present not going well doesn't help anyones case. While Tilak Varma and Dewald Brevis are the two players who have been excellent this season, the bowling unit is very weak. Ever since the auction was concluded MI looked like the weakest team on paper and so far that has been the case. They spent too much money on certain players and eventually failed to fill the gaps in their squad. In one match MI played only 2 foreign players and one of them was 18 year old Dewald Brevis.

Mumbai's highest buy was Ishan Kishan for 15.25 Cr who also ended up being the most expensive player in the auction. They spent 8 Cr on Jofra Archer who won't be able to play a single game this season. They also ended up paying 8.25 Cr on Tim David who was dropped after only two matches. Mumbai have always been among the best squads but this season that doesn't seem to be the case. MI also need Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard to step up and start performing consistently. The bowling unit does need to improve a lot. Trying out some younger players won't be a bad idea at this stage.
