IPL Match 20 – Delhi Capitals edge Sunrisers Hyderabad in a super over thriller

The IPL Super Sunday concluded on a perfect note as Delhi Capitals defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in a dramatic super over encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Chasing a target of 160, SRH got off to a disappointing start as they lost their captain early in the 4th over owing to a run-out. Jonny Bairstow and Kane Williamson then steadied the SRH proceeding. Bairstow looked in great touch as he hit 38 off 18 balls. Axar Patel’s two quick dismissals helped Delhi shift the momentum on their side. However, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson put a brilliant effort with his half-century to keep the Sunrisers alive in the contest. Williamson slammed a gritty 66 off 51 which featured some fine hitting in the form of 8 fours. In the end, Jagadeeshan Suchith's 8 ball cameo of 14 laced with 2 fours and a six took the contest to the Super Over as SRH finished their chase on 159/7.

Earlier, after deciding to bat first, Delhi Capitals were off to a rocking start owing to Prithvi Shaw’s solid hitting from one end and Shikhar Dhawan's smart and steady game from the other. The duo yet again shared a 50 run partnership for the first wicket with Shaw hitting his half century from 35 deliveries. Shikhar Dhawan got dismissed in the 11th over and as one brought two, Shaw made his way back to the pavilion as well in the next over after scoring a stunning 53 off 39. As the Chennai Pitch started to slow down, the Capitals struggled to accelerate the scoreboard with their main men Rishabh Pant and Steve Smith new at the crease. Pant’s 37 runs off 27 balls and Smith's unbeaten 34 runs off 25 balls guided the Capitals to a competitive score of 159/4 at the end of 20 overs.

Things came down to the first Super Over of the IPL 2021 as in reply of DC's 159/4, SRH too finished on the score of 159/7 in their chase. As per the Super Over rules, SRH continued to bat in the super over with their captain David Warner and Kane Williamson walking onto the field to take on Axar Patel. Patel did a fine job to restrict SRH on 7/0. As expected, Rashid Khan was entrusted with the responsibility of defending 8 runs for the SRH in the deciding over. DC sent Rishabh Pant and Shikhar Dhawan to bat as Pant took his side home with a cautious 5 off 4 that helped DC beat SRH on the final ball of the super over scoring 8/0.
