How does Hardik Pandya fit into India’s T20 World Cup side?

(Cricket news) Now that the IPL is wrapped up, all eyes of cricket lovers all around the world will be on the upcoming T20 World Cup. Although India has a very strong all-round squad, there will be a few concerns around the camp.

The selectors made a few tough calls. One of which was picking Rahul Chahar in the squad ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahar didn't have a good IPL in the 2nd phase and was subsequently dropped from the Mumbai Indians team. Surya Kumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan's form is also another concern.

But perhaps the main concern is Hardik Pandya, the all-rounder who has been a match winner for India in limited overs cricket. All that came into question after he suffered a back injury and stopped bowling. Despite that, Pandya played the IPL 2020 for Mumbai Indians as a pure batter and performed exceedingly well. Pandya played for the Indian team as a pure batter in Australia and won man of the series award in the 3 match T20 series.

Then in the series against England, Pandya started bowling and did a decent job but his batting had taken a toll. He then had a disastrous tour of Sri Lanka. Hardik Pandya was named in the World Cup squad presumably as an all-rounder but he didn't ball a single delivery in the 2021 IPL and had an average of 14.11 with his highest score being 40*. Captain Virat Kohli, coach Ravi Shastri and mentor MS Dhoni will have a lot to think about and the warm up games against England and Australia will be a good time to test things out.

If Pandya is fit enough to bowl 4 overs and bowls well in the warm up games then he becomes an automatic selection. If Pandya isn't going to bowl then his batting form hasn't been good enough to get him in as a pure batter. Shardul Thakur was added in the squad presumably to cover for Pandya.

Hardik Pandya's batting position would have been number 6 with Jadeja coming in at 7. There is no direct replacement for Pandya at number 6 with Rishabh Pant set to bat at 5. If the all-rounder doesn't play then Jadeja might be pushed to number 6 with Shardul at 7 followed by 4 pure bowlers which makes the batting a tad bit weaker. Ishan Kishan has been selected as an opener so the Indian camp wouldn't be too keen on bringing him into the middle order and then pushing everyone down.

Possible line-up with Pandya:

KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarty.

The questions may or may not be answered in the warm-up games. We may have to wait till the opening game against Pakistan to find out. Hardik Pandya, the batter is a match winner as he has proved in the past and if he is backed, there is a high chance that he will win matches for India.
