Gaby Lewis’ brilliant 94 guides Scorchers to victory in second the Arachas Super 50 Cup

DUBLIN – Gaby Lewis smashed her second successive half-century as her Scorchers side cinched back-to-back victories in the Arachas Super 50 Cup at Pembroke Cricket Club on Sunday.

With Typhoons skipper Laura Delany missing out the game, stand-in skipper Celeste Raack won the toss and decided to bat first.

The decision turned out to be great with Typhoons openers Rebecca Stokell (28) and Rachel Delaney (73) putting on 66 runs for the first wicket. However, after Stokell and Sarah Forbes (1) lost their wickets, the Scorchers bounced back into the game first by halting the flow of runs and then by claiming regular wickets.

Delaney played the anchor role, scoring her half-century off 81 balls, and hit a number of scintillating off-side shots. However, she failed to get support from the other end, with three run outs.

Raack played a crucial cameo at the end with her 23 off 23 balls, but in the process endured a leg injury that denied her the opportunity of taking the field in the second innings. The Typhoons score was lifted to over 200 with a late overs 19 from Georgina Dempsey, as the Blues ended their 50 overs on 208-9.

In reply, the Scorchers lost last season’s leading run scorer Leah Paul who got out without opening her account. Nevertheless,Gaby Lewis (94) and Alana Dalzell (10) contributed 82 runs for the second-wicket to put the Scorchers in the winning position.

Lewis looked in great form as she striked balls over the fence on many occasions over extra cover and mid-off, along with some  equally well-timed shots from square of the wicket. Her first 50 runs required 58 balls and featured 8 fours, and she continued to keep the run rate going. Then, just six runs short of what could have been her maiden hundred at this level, she top-edged while attempting a sweep shot and got caught at square leg by Georgina Dempsey.

Sophie MacMahon too joined the party with an unbeaten 44 off 47 balls, and the Scorchers won the game by 4 wickets with 8 overs remaining.

Gaby Lewis was adjudged Player of the Match for the second consecutive match.
