Cricket team Leinster Lightning move on top of Inter-Provincial Cup table after rain disrupts chase against Munster Reds

Leinster Lightning’s match against Munster Reds was abandoned in the Inter-Provincial Cup due to rain at the Pembroke Cricket Club.

Leinster Lightning elected to bowl after winning the toss and got two early wickets for the score to be 11-2 by the third over. Skipper Tyrone Kane had a brief moment of brilliance, hitting two sixes and two fours but was caught and bowled by Simi Singh, having registered only 31 runs.

The rain resulted in a 23 over a side game and the Reds registered a respectable total of 147-6 with brothers Greg Ford (21) and Matt Ford (45*) playing a big part in the total with their middle order contribution.

Barry McCarthy (2-18) in five overs and Josh Little (2-26) displayed impressive performances for Leinster Lightning to restrict the total to 147 runs.

Lightning could not have begun their response with a stronger start as Jack Tector hit a six on the first ball and scored an impressive 24 runs in 19 balls. The rain caused a further delay resulting in a target of 131 runs in 20 overs. Lightning put the foot on the accelerator as Kevin O’Brien hit two sixes to achieve the total.

However, the match was abandoned when the rain returned, giving Leinster Lightning 2 points to move them to the top of the Cup table ahead of North West Warriors.

The two sides will meet again on Saturday at the Inter-Provincial Cup.
