Alex Carey set to make Test debut and don the gloves in the almighty Ashes at The Gabba

(Cricket news) Australia have added Alex Carey to replace Tim Paine in their squad for the first Ashes. Australian management and captains have trusted Carey by naming him as the lone keeper batter for the big series on his debut.

Tim Paine stepped down as Australia captain and eventually took a mental health break due to the 'sexting scandal'. Carey was always the frontrunner to replace the Tasmanian. The Aussies have chosen him ahead of the experienced Matthew Wade and youngsters Josh Phillipe and Josh Inglis. Carey was always going to be the safe and least controversial option which may be what Australia needed.

Tim Paine's contribution to the team was more as a captain than a gloveman or a batter. Safety behind the wickets and a few runs from Carey would be enough for him to justify his place at least for the 5 match series. Vice captain Steve Smith will have a lot of work to do from the slips. He will be crucial in taking DRS calls and changing the field. Smith will work along with Carey especially when the spinner Nathan Lyon is holding one end while Pat Cummins will be focusing on his bowling.

30-year-old Alex Carey has been playing international white ball cricket for 3 years now. He has an ODI average of 36.45 which isn't bad for someone who bats in the lower middle order. He holds the record for most dismissals in a single Sheffield Shield season with 50 which is a proof of his fine glovework. The South Australian also averages over 50 in his last 2 Sheffield Shield seasons.

Carey doesn't have too big a shoes to fill in but he will be the first one to be criticised if Australia do not perform well. The good news for him is that every single Australian tailender can contribute with the willow and hold the crease at the very least which makes his job a little easier as he will definitely be batting at No. 7. Underwhelming performances in the first two Test matches could see him be dropped for the next 3 especially if Australia does not perform up to standards. Josh Phillipe and Josh Inglis will be knocking at the door.

The first Test kicks off at The Gabba on 8th December where Alex Carey will receive the baggy green cap no. 461.
