2 big decisions that are backfiring for Mithali Raj and Ramesh Powar

(Cricket news) India is having a mixed bag of a World Cup campaign. The Women in blue have played four matches so far, two of them against Pakistan and West Indies have been dominant victories while the clashes against New Zealand and England have resulted in big losses. India are 3rd on the points table and are yet to play the two teams ahead of them which are South Africa and India.

The Indian side came into the tournament after 3 back to back series losses to South Africa, England and Australia. Selectors took a big call by dropping Jemimah Rodrigues and the experienced Shikha Pandey from the squad. The inconsistencies of the team are definitely not down to those calls as both Rodrigues and Pandey were inconsistent themselves in the past couple of years.

There are a few other calls which coach Ramesh Powar and captain Mithali Raj took which have been two sided. India after going with 6 pure batters and Deepti Sharma at number 7 changed it by dropping pure batter Yastika Bhatia to get in All-rounder Sneh Rana. To take up Yastika's number 3 spot Deepti was promoted to number 3 and after that didn't work Mithali Raj was reverted to number 3. The constant change of the batting line-up at the big tournament does more good than bad. Especially in this scenario where it is not situation based.

The other big call was regarding Shefali Verma who was backed by the team for so long and now after a run of bad performances was dropped after a duck in the 1st game of the World Cup. Bhatia was asked to open and even though she played a good aggressive knock against West Indies, the impact of Shefali Verma was missing. Now if the management brings Verma back it will invite trouble. As both the young batters will have massive pressure in every game they play. Chopping and changing the opening partner is not good for Smriti Mandhana either, whose form is very crucial for team India.

It will be interesting to see how India goes against Australia and if there are any changes to team personnel and/or combination. A win against Australia will be a big step towards Semi Final qualification where for that the batters have to fire on all cylinders. Deepti Sharma's form is a very big concern as she is one of the most important player in this Indian side.
