Bayern reach the German Cup quarterfinals

(Football news) Bayern Munich got back to winning ways as they crushed hosts Mainz 4-0 on Wednesday to book their spot in the DFB Pokal German Cup quarterfinals which was surprisingly their first win of the year. New signing Joao Cancelo was in the starting lineup 24 hours after signing for the Bavarian giants on loan from Manchester City. Bayern were back to their usual best as they played a stellar first half, scoring three times to kill off the tie quickly.

The German champions will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League Round of 16 in two weeks. They started the year with three consecutive disappointing draws in the Bundesliga. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting started off the scoring when he volleyed in at the far post to give Bayern the lead in the 17th minute as Cancelo registered his first assist before Jamal Musiala doubled their advantage with a low left-footed shot that went in off the post. Bayern hit the woodwork with a Joshua Kimmich free kick before he scored again two minutes before the break when Choupo-Moting flicked the ball to Leroy Sane who slotted it in from eight metres.

The visitors eased off their tempo after the break as Mainz found more space to attack but they were beaten once more when Canadian international Alphonso Davies rose the highest to power in a header for Bayern’s fourth goal in the 83rd minute. The hosts deserved a consolation goal for their second half performance but instead saw coach Bo Svensson sent off for dissent when Alexander Hack got his marching orders in the 87th for a second booking of the match. Defending champions RB Leipzig also moved into the next round with a 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim.
