Babar Azam offered to lead the Pakistan white-ball side once more

(Cricket News) The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has once more offered the white-ball captaincy to Babar Azam. Shaheen Afridi’s short stint as the T20I skipper of Pakistan would be cut short, if Babar accepts the offer presented to him.  Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB Chairman met Babar earlier this week to make the offer.

Babar stepped down as the skipper of Pakistan from all three formats of the game, after Pakistan’s bad run in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. He has asked the PCB to be appointed captain across all three formats if he is to consider a return. Shan Masood is the current Test captain, while Shaheen is leading the T20 side. There was no official announcement of the ODI skipper.

The decision became quite obvious since Naqvi refused to back Afridi at a press conference in Lahore on Sunday. He said a final decision would be made after Pakistan’s training camp with the military ended. Afridi’s leadership qualities went under the scanner post a disappointing series loss against New Zealand followed by a horrible PSL season.

Shan Masood might also loose the red-ball captaincy, if Babar’s demand to be the all-format skipper is accepted as a deal breaker to reappoint him. Masood also led the Pakistan side for just one tour, where Pakistan loss all the three games against Australia.

The role of the Pakistan’s head coach is also vacant as off now. As things stand, PCB have been through negotiations with several candidates for the role of head coach, but still hasn’t managed to reach a deal. Shane Watson, Mike Hesson and Adam Voges are among those who eventually turned down the offer. PCB has still not managed to crack a deal, while reports suggests that the board is in talks with Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten.
