Premier League transfer window: Top 5 signings of the summer

(Football news) The transfer window has come to an end and the Premier League has exceeded all the expectations in the drama, deadline day deals and big money spent. An estimated £1 billion has been spent on 103 permanent signings with Arsenal leading the pack, spending £156.8m followed by Manchester United and Manchester City.

The amount of money spent on a transfer does not necessarily correlate to whether it's good business for the club, for example: the Gunners, despite spending the most this summer and currently finding themselves at the bottom of the Premier League table is evidence to it. Let’s review the 5 best transfer deals in the Premier League this summer.

1. Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea (£97 million)

Despite Chelsea winning the Champions League last year, it was evident that they desperately needed a striker as they struggled to score goals. Their tally of 58 goals was the least amongst the Premier League’s top 7 as the likes of Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham, Olivier Giroud failed to impress. Lukaku is a proven goalscorer who will not need to adapt to the Premier League, having already played for the likes of Manchester United, Everton and West Brom in the past and scoring 113 goals in England. The Belgian guarantees goals to this Chelsea side and has already proved that he can team up well with Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic.

2. Raphael Varane to Manchester United (£41 million)

It’s fair to say that Manchester United have had a real bargain by signing Raphael Varane for just £41 million. The Frenchman brings with him a wealth of experience and a winning mentality, qualities which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side desperately needs if they are to win trophies this season. Varane is a solid defender, always calm and composed and his pace will make the former Real Madrid man the perfect partner for Harry Maguire. He has already displayed a promising performance on his debut against Wolves where he helped Man United get their first clean sheet and gave an assist. A world class defender bought at a price lower than Ben White to Arsenal. Definitely a good bit of business by the Manchester United board.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United (£20 million)

Any transfer involving Cristiano Ronaldo will be a good one. The five time Ballon d’Or winner is back home at Old Trafford, much to the delight of the Manchester United fans. Ronaldo may be 36, but he finished his last season with Juventus as the top scorer in the Serie A and is in prime physical condition despite being at an age where most footballers call it a day. A model professional both on and off the pitch, Ronaldo is not just expected to score goals for Manchester United, he will also be instrumental for grooming the likes of Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho. He will undoubtedly transform this Manchester United side from a good team to perhaps one of the all-time greats. Time will tell.

4. Jack Grealish to Manchester City (£100 million)

Manchester City may have broken the British transfer record for Jack Grealish, but few can argue that it’s not worth it. With transfer fees going through the roof in recent years, it’s unfair to judge a player, particularly one with the quality of Grealish simply by the transfer amount. Grealish is expected to play on the left side of their 4-3-3 formation, but if one thing Pep Guardiola’s teams have taught us, it’s that he will have the freedom to not just be limited to his position. City has a wealth of attacking talent and Grealish cannot expect to be the main man at a team that has won three Premier League trophies in five years. However, he might be just what the champions of England need to take the next step and dominate Europe.

5. Jadon Sancho to Manchester United (£73 million)

Manchester United have been long standing admirers of Jadon Sancho and rightly so. The former Borussia Dortmund winger scored 8 goals and provided 11 assists in the Bundesliga last season and has consistently registered impressive statistics, especially for a player who is just 21 years old. The England international solves Manchester United’s right wing problem, especially with Daniel James’ transfer to Leeds United. He may need time to adapt to the physicality and pace of the Premier League, but Sancho is a long term transfer who is expected to serve Manchester United for over a decade.
