South Korea dominates as Deepika Kumari finishes 9th in Women’s Individual Ranking Round

(Archery news) Olympics 2021 Live Update; World number 1 Deepika Kumari started India’s Olympic campaign with 12 intense sets and a score of 663 in the Women’s Individual Ranking Round at Yumenoshima Park. Despite starting well and finishing fourth at the end of the fourth round, Deepika failed to maintain momentum in the second half which was dominated by the South Korean trio of An San – 680, Jang Minhee – 677, Chaeyoung Kang- 675 who occupy the first three spots.

The Olympics was always going to be a level above any other sporting competition and An San of South Korea broke the Olympic record previously held by Ukraine’s Lina Herasymenko tally of 673 points in 1996 with an impressive score of 680.

Deepika Kumari’s points total at the Women’s Individual Ranking Round means that the Indian archer will avoid the South Koreans in the Round of 64 but will face Bhutan's Karma who finished with an overall points total of 616. However, the Indian archer faces the possibility of clashing against top seed An San of South Korea in Round 3 in the quarterfinals.

The Men’s Individual Ranking Round is set to begin at 9:30 am on Friday, 23rd July, 2021.
