(Tennis news) Carlos Alcaraz defeated Tommy Paul 6-4 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Miami Open, thereby extending his winning streak to nine games. The Spaniard will need to win the ATP 1000 event to keep his world number 1 ranking and will now take on American player Taylor Fritz in the last eight after he overcame Denmark’s Holger Rune 6-3 6-4. A victory in Miami would mean Alcaraz will get the ‘Sunshine Double’ following his victory at the Indian Wells earlier this month.

In other results Russian Karen Khachanov secured a win over Stefanos Tsitsipas, beating the Greek 7-6 (7-4) 6-4. The result meant that Khachanov will now take on the winner of the fourth-round tie between Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo and Italian Lorenzo Sonego. 10th seed Jannik Sinner defeated Russian Andrey Rublev 6-2 6-4 and will face Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori in the last eight.

Speaking after the match, Carlos Alcaraz said “I feel at home here. It is easy to play here in Miami with all the energy I receive every day. I am enjoying myself and I think that is the key to playing at such a high level every match. I hope to keep going. I played a really great match and I hope to play the same level in the quarter-final. I moved well and defended well and I counter-attacked and I think if I play at that same level I will have a lot of chances to get through.”

In the women’s category Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina progressed to the semi-finals with a 6-3 6-0 win over Italy’s Martina Trevisan. Rybakina could also win the ‘Sunshine Double’ after winning the Indian Wells and is now unbeaten in 12 games. The Kazakh will now face either American third seed Jessica Pegula or Russian Anastasia Potapova next.
