PARIS (AP)— Despite Paris Saint-Germain’s apparent decline in the Champions League standings, coach Luis Enrique is “extremely confident” that the team is headed in the right direction.
In 25th place out of 36 teams, PSG, a semifinalist the previous season, is in the elimination zone. Its third loss in five games came on the road against Bayern Munich on Tuesday, losing 1-0. As Enrique continues to play without a recognized center forward, the team has struggled in goal and managed just three goals up front.
“I have a lot of confidence. Before Saturday’s French league match against Nantes, Enrique stated on Friday, “We should have nine points; the position in the Champions League table is not deserved.” “Everything can be improved, but I have a lot of hope.”
The former Barcelona and Spain coach did, however, allude at upcoming changes.
“A coach can learn a great deal from every game and every loss. “All of this will affect my choices,” he stated, without elaborating on what needed to change.
Last season, Kolo Muani, a France international, arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt for 95 million euros ($100 million), making him the third most expensive acquisition in the club’s history.
The only players to cost more are Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, who joined for a total of 402 million euros ($424 million) in 2017.
However, Kolo Muani lost his starting position in the team after just scoring 11 goals in 53 games.
Gonçalo Ramos of Portugal may return to the starting lineup against Nantes as a center forward after he has fully recovered from surgery on his left ankle performed in late August.
