2022 World Cup: Cameroon stun Brazil while Switzerland beat Serbia in a thrilling virtual knockout

World Cup: Brazil Vs Cameroon

(Football news) Cameroon did the unthinkable by beating Brazil 1-0 at the World Cup. Even if it wasn’t enough to seal them a Round of 16, it was a memorable night as they became the first African team to beat Brazil at the World Cup and also become the first team in this edition to have a shot on target against them and score against them. Brazil did rest all of their first choice players but it was still a very good side.

Cameroon defended brilliantly throughout the 90 minutes and when the chance came they scored. Captain Vincent Aboubakar scored the only goal of the match in the injury time to seal the victory. He was sent off after getting a second yellow for taking off his shirt while celebrating the goal. In the process he became the first player since Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 World Cup final to score and get a red card in a World Cup match.

The one big concern for Brazil is that both their left backs are now injured. Alex Sandro wasn’t in the squad as he was suffering from a muscle problem. His replacement Alex Telles had to be taken off due to an injury in the 54th minute. Brazil may have to play without a natural left back in the Round of 16 tie against South Korea. Neymar and Danilo’s fitness is also an issue and that too a big one as Brazil clearly missed their star man in these two games.

Switzerland needed a win to qualify for the Round of 16 and they did exactly that with a 3-2 win over Serbia. Xherdan Shaqiri gave Switzerland the lead in the 20th minute. Serbia’s two incredible strikers – Alexander Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic scored a goal each to put Serbia in front. The lead didn’t last long as Breel Embolo equalised just before half time. Remo Freuler’s goal 3 minutes into half time proved to be the winner for the Swiss as Serbia couldn’t score again. Switzerland will now take on Portugal in the Round of 16.
